One way to experience the breathtaking scenery of the Canadian Rockies is by train. There is one train in particular that will take you through some of the most iconic, scenic and otherwise inaccessible routes in this region, while you indulge in sheer luxury: the Rocky Mountaineer.
Rocky Mountaineer Train
The Rocky Mountaineer is a train ride like no other. Your magical journey will begin from the moment you arrive at the Rocky Mountaineer train station, where the staff there check you in with a warm welcome. Look out for the bagpipe performance!
On the train itself, while absorbing the beautiful views of the passing scenery, you’ll be travelling in a comfortable coach and enjoying the sophisticated fine dining on offer. The Rocky Mountaineer’s culinary team is made up of award-winning chefs – expect to sample the likes of slowly roasted pork loin, seared Albacore tuna, tender Fraser Valley chicken and roasted vegetable ravioli. All the gourmet dishes are made with locally sourced ingredients from the Pacific Northwest.
Rocky Mountain packages
87 different packages are available, each varying by departure point, start date, destinations, and length. Extended packages include hotels, a motorcoach journey, and even a pre or post tour cruise.
There are two tiers of service level to choose from with each package: Goldleaf and Silverleaf. The Goldleaf service is the most luxurious and popular option. You’ll get to travel in a two-level glass-domed coach with full sized windows, eat gourmet meals in an exclusive dining room, receive complimentary drinks and snacks, and stay in the deluxe overnight accommodation.
With the Silverleaf service, you’ll travel in a single-level glass-domed coach with oversized windows and receive delicious hot entrée options served in your seat, along with complimentary snacks and beverages. Overnight, you’ll stay in a comfortable hotel.
Rocky Mountaineer route
The Rocky Mountaineer covers four main routes as detailed below. You can mix and match train routes and ocean cruises to create the journey you’ve always dreamed of taking.
This is the Rocky Mountaineer’s newest route, which stretches along the coast to connect Seattle in the USA with Vancouver in BC, Canada, before going on to the Canadian Rockies. Journeys along this cross-border route make the most of the daylight so that you can appreciate the sparkling Pacific Ocean as well as the magnificent terrain of the Rockies.
Rainforest to Gold Rush
Witness BC’s lush coastal rainforest, see the rugged landscape of the Fraser Canyon and travel through the fascinating Cariboo gold rush region via this Rocky Mountaineer route, which includes the destinations of Vancouver, Whistler, Quesnel, and Jasper. Your journey will take you past picturesque Mount Robson, the most prominent mountain (and the highest point) in the Canadian Rockies before you arrive at Jasper National Park.
Journey through the Clouds
You’ll pass through some of the prettiest valleys and highest peaks in the Canadian Rockies, including Mount Robson as well as the Albreda Glacier. You’ll follow the Fraser River and see the Fraser Canyon as well as the beautiful Pyramid Falls. Destinations include Vancouver, Kamloops, and Jasper.
First Passage to the West
The most popular route of all is “First Passage to the West”, which connects Canada from the East to the West. Boarding the Canadian Rockies train along this route will take you on a journey of scenic discovery, past Castle Mountain, the Continental Divide and through the remarkable Spiral Tunnels.
History buffs will appreciate the significance of this route. Not only is it the original route from when the Rocky Mountaineer company first started back in 1990, but it also travels over the famous Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), built in 1885.
In passing the CPR, you’ll see Craigellachie, the spot of the Last Spike (the ceremonial spike that was driven into the railway tracks in 1885 to mark the completion of the railway and the realisation of national unity).
